Corona drug question: Some people relapse after taking a Pfizer pill; Health experts question its effectiveness
In many countries, Paxlovid injections are prescribed for people with mild coronary symptoms. It is manufactured by the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer. In April, the pill has also received approval from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI). However, there are now reports that in some cases coronary artery disease returns in patients after recovery after taking the pill.
According to a report by the AP news agency, the Paxlovid pill has become a household name for coronavirus patients in America. On the one hand, the government has spent $10 billion so far to buy PaxLovid. This can save 2 million lives. And health experts are now questioning the efficacy of this drug ie Efficacy.
What's the matter?
In some patients, the infection is recurring even after 5 days of taking Paxlovid tablet as a rule. This raises two kinds of questions. First- Do patients get sick even after taking the drug? Second- the patient must repeat the entire course of Paxlovid.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says- Patients should avoid taking a double course of tablets. In fact, people with recurrent coronary symptoms are at increased risk of serious illness and hospitalization. In such a situation, first medical advice is required.
Paxlovid tablet effective against delta variant
Clinical trials of the Paxlovid tablet were conducted by the Pfizer Company at a time when the world was struggling with the Delta variant. At that time most people did not even receive the vaccine. In its trial, Pfizer tested Paxlovid in unvaccinated coronary patients who had severe infections and were at risk for diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. The drug increased the risk of hospitalization and death for patients from 7% to 1%.
Today the situation is different. About 90% of people in the United States have been given their first dose of the vaccine. 60% of Americans have had Corona at least once. The hospitalization rate of vaccinated individuals is also less than 1%. In such a case, health professionals are raising questions about the effect of Paxlovid tablet on them.
Health experts are criticizing the tablet
Dr. A.S. Michael Charnes of Boston’s VA Health System said – Paxlovid is a very effective drug, but perhaps weakens against the Omicron variant. This is the reason that in some patients the symptoms of corona start coming again. On the other hand, both the FDA and Pfizer have reported that even in early studies with the tablet, 1-2% of people had problems with coronary symptoms that returned 10 days after recovery from infection.
According to Andy Pekosz of John Hopkins University, the Paxovid tablet may not be as effective at relieving the symptoms of the virus as before. They fear that as a result new corona strains may appear in the patient’s body, which could prove to be a threat in the future in defeating PaxLovid.
University of Minnesota researcher David Bolware says – If the US government is spending this much money on this tablet, then Pfizer needs to do new research and share the data with the government and help formulate better policy against the epidemic.

Pfizer recently reported that giving PaxLovid to families of coronary patients does not reduce their risk of infection. The company also made it clear last year that PaxLovid appears to be failing to control the symptoms of patients with coronary artery disease and reduce hospital admissions. So he is studying new variants of corona and the effect of Paxlovid tablet on vaccinated people. It will also be determined in the study whether this tablet is able to reduce the severity and duration of coronary artery disease.
